Convento do Carmo. Lisbon

There are quite a lot of photos from Portugal that I had forgotten about. These taken in Convento do Carmo, or rather in the ruins of the convent and the church (destroyed during the 1755 earthquake), among them.

  1. Considering how big that earthquake was, it’s amazing the entire city of Lisbon wasn’t completely destroyed! Those ruins are beautiful but haunting at the same time. It’s a shame the convent isn’t still standing.

Although I lived in Lisbon for 10 months, Convento do Carmo was one of the last places that I visited. You’re right – it’s haunting but also very charming. And it makes a great model for photos…;)

  2. More photos for the coffee table book, I see. :)

I find it interesting that the arches survived so well. I guess they really are a strong architectural design.
